Bilimsel olarak açıklaması, burnumuzun iç yüzeyi mukoza denen bir hücre tabakasıyla kaplı. Bu kısımda bol miktarda sinir hücresi vardır. Burunun mukozasından mukus diye adlandırılan sümüksü bir madde salgılanır. Bu sümüksü madde, hem burnumuzdan akciğerlere doğru giden havanın nemlenmesine,

hem de havadan gelen yabancı maddeleri dışarı atmada yarar. Acı yiyeceklerin içinde bulunan “kapsaisin” adı verilen kimyasal madde ağız ve burunda bulunan sinir hücrelerini uyarır. Bu olaydan sonra mukoza hücrelerinin salgılamış olduğu mukus miktarı artar. Burnumuzun akma sebebi budur. Kapsaisin maddesi de mukus ile birlikte dışarı atılır. Bu olay, aslında yabancı maddelerin vücudumuzdan atılmasını sağlayan bir olaydır.
